UK-India FTA: Textile Industry Growth & Investment Opportunities | India ITME (2025)

The future of textiles and the potential for collaborative growth are topics that deserve our attention. With the UK-India FTA and Singapore CECA, we're witnessing a unique opportunity for global economic expansion.

On October 29, 2025, in Singapore, the India ITME Society hosted an exclusive event titled "Fabricating the Future of Textile Industry: From Heritage to High-Tech." This gathering brought together key players from the Indian textile and textile engineering sectors, including government officials, entrepreneurs, and industry experts. The aim was to foster collaboration, exchange innovative ideas, and explore the vast opportunities within these industries.

But here's where it gets controversial... The event was held on the sidelines of CITME+ASIA Singapore, a strategic move by the Indian textile industry to accelerate trade partnerships and joint ventures. Mr. Rohit Kansal, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles, highlighted India's position as a global hub for weaving and knitting machinery, with a rapidly growing domestic market of over 1.4 billion consumers. He emphasized the potential for economic growth and mutual benefits through investment and collaboration.

And this is the part most people miss... The Indian textile industry is not just about manufacturing; it's a driving force for job creation, exports, and innovation. Mr. Hemant Sharma, President of Polyester at Reliance Industries Ltd., spoke about how the industry is set to become a global major, a trusted sourcing hub for textiles, contributing to India's ambitious goal of achieving a $30 trillion economy by 2047.

The recently signed UK-BTMA agreement has sparked interest, with Mr. Jason Kent, CEO of the British Textile Machinery Association, describing it as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" to create a new global textile order. He believes the FTA will bring together India's manufacturing prowess and digital talent with the UK's expertise in design, research, and sustainability.

Mr. Sanghvi, Chairman of the India ITME Society, emphasized the robust economy and market growth in India, with a 25% increase in spending during the Diwali festival in 2025 compared to the previous year. He believes the textile industry has the potential to weave a future of prosperity, sustainability, and inclusivity for all.

The India ITME Society is committed to continuing this dialogue and facilitating business at the upcoming India ITME 2026 event, which will be the most relevant textile engineering business event in Southeast Asia. It will be hosted in India from December 4th to 9th, 2026, at IEML, Greater Noida.

So, what do you think? Is the future of textiles and global economic growth intertwined? Are we witnessing a new era of collaboration and innovation? Feel free to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
